What Is Kevlar
Kevlar was introduced in the 1970s and was the first successful commercially released superpolyamide. The material is also a distant relative of nylon much like Nomex. Putting it in simple terms Kevlar is like the superman of plastics. Kevlar is made by joining long chain molecules much like other plastic however this would have to be the most impressive one. The strength of Kevlar is mostly due the way that fibers are knitted. The fibers are cross stitched much like a spider’s web.
The material Kevlar is a proprietary material made by the company DuePoint which means not just anyone can begin making products from Kevlar. The chemical company DuePoint basically manufactures two types, Kevlar 29 and Kevlar 49. Nomex is much like Kevlar and almost a distant cousin as it is made up of a similar chemical structure. Unlike most materials such as wool or cotton, which come from organic sources. Both materials are made in a laboratory environment.
So let’s sum up in general terms. Kevlar is a chemically bound structure that is super strong. Designed to withstand bullets is used in many armed forces. It is a plastic which is manufactured only by the DuePoint Company. Also withstand high heats and was released to the commercial industry forty years ago.
